Objective 1: Use developmentally appropriate communication to promote cognitive skill-building in each age group

Activities/Resources:

  • Research the appropriate behaviors for each age group

  • Observe lead teachers using age appropriate communication, take notes

  • Research how, as a teacher, one would interact with each age group

Evidence:

  • Create a pamphlet listing appropriate behaviors for each age group, as well as how to appropriately interact with and engage each age group.

Evidence Overview:

In order to showcase what I observed in terms of the use of age appropriate communication, I have created a pamphlet listing appropriate behaviors for ages one ("Cubs"), three ("Pandas"), and five ("Tigers). I wanted to focus on three really distinctive age groups to really get a sense of the progression of the different developmentally appropriate communication. Using what I learned from my research and from my observations within each classroom, I was able to get a sense of how to communicate with children of different ages. Thanks to my position as a floater, I was placed in every single classroom over the course of the summer. This enabled me to not only observe and learn the different ways each age group communicates, but notice the difference in the way I should be communicating with them as I moved from class to class (especially when transitioning from the infant room to the pre-K classroom). A lot of the behaviors and forms of communication listed below were things I observed over the course of my time at Building Blocks!
